Dressing for Spring Events: What to Wear Now

We’ve finally shed our winter cocoon, and the recent return of sunshine means we’re ready to embrace all the social events the season throws at us. Spring usually brings a flurry of weddings, friend gatherings and Bank Holiday fun, but what will you wear to look and feel your best? Below, we’ve rounded up some spring events that you may already have on your calendar, with tips on what to wear to stay on trend and the pieces to choose to complement your style.

Wedding Guest Romance

Spring brings the start of wedding season, and one of this year's biggest style trends aptly focuses on romantic dressing and how we can reimagine it with a fresh approach. Take inspiration from the fantasy romance novels that have been taking over the book charts (ACOTAR, Fourth Wing) and inject some fairy-esque magic into your wedding guest looks. Think ruffles, lace, embellishments and sensual fabrics in shades of soft pink, sweet pastels or romantic neutrals. Try out feminine silhouettes that nip in at the waist or are softly structured, evoking a sense of historical periods. Look at the runways of Simone Rocha, Richard Quinn and Valentino and add some amour to your look in the form of tulle dresses, pretty lace details or layered sheer fabrics.

BBQ & Chill

The sun is shining, the grill is sizzling, and you want your outfit to be equally hot. But what should you wear to an alfresco gathering with your friends? A BBQ is one of the easiest spring events to dress for, as the dress code is relaxed. Opt for a can't-go-wrong denim pieces mixed with light and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. A casual get together will also let you play into the sporty aesthetic that's trending right now by weaving rugby shirts, bermuda shorts or a track jacket into your look. For a fashionista vibe, mix both masculine and feminine pieces, such as a box pleat or sheer midi skirt paired with a polo top or an oversized bomber jacket when it gets chilly at night.   

Glam At The Races

Whether you care about the actual racing or not, the day is a great excuse to dress up and sip on some bubbles. Ladylike glamour is key at these events, and while many races have removed the strict style rules of the past, formal dress is still encouraged at many, so check the dress code before you go! Place your bets on midi and maxi dresses or even jumpsuits – look at the runways of Emilia Wickstead, Carolina Herrera and Michael Kors for inspo, and take note that polka dots are the standout print of the season. Choose a block heel sandal, wedge or court shoe that’s comfortable enough to stand in all day and remember: stilettos sink!

Weekend Getaway

Now the weather's better, it's the perfect chance to escape for a weekend away. Whether you prefer a bustling city break or a countryside escape, there's nothing quite like a mini holiday to reset your mind. Travel light with an overnight bag and pack interchangeable pieces that work together like a condensed capsule wardrobe. This season's Modern Mariner trend is centered on nautical elements that work perfectly for a casual weekend away – think bold striped pieces, dark denim, sailor collars, and gold details in a classic color palette of navy, red, brown, and cream.

Festival Fun

Spring signals the return of watching live music outdoors. Whether you're going to Lollapalooza or braving a weekend of camping at Stagecoach Festival, you'll want to be dressed for the occasion. As the first big music event of the year, Coachella sets the style rules for festival season. This year saw a lot of colorful crochet, jumbo sequins, and vintage denim for daywear, accompanied by oversized sports tops and jackets to cover up when the sun goes down. If the spring weather is a washout, don't forget to pack your rainboots and a rain jacket – it's hard to admit, but sometimes function is more important than fashion!
