Meet Alyson Schlange
Tell us about yourself! Where do you live, who are your people, and what was a career you had before House of Colour?
My name is Alyson Schlange, and I live in Boise, ID. When I'm not working as a stylist, you can catch me around town in various places every weeknight, shuttling around my three children as their personal chauffeur.
Thankfully, it's not just me chasing after my tiny band of humans, but also the love of my life, Scott. He's everyone's favorite (including the dogs), and I'm perfectly content with it.
If I'm not spending time with family, I'm trying to sneak in coffee dates and lunches with friends or get them to come boxing with me. Prior to my career with House of Colour, I worked in TV production, a field I had imagined myself in since the fifth grade. So, I've been fortunate enough to hold two dream jobs in my life. I bet you could guess what the second dream job is!
How did you first hear about House of Colour?
I heard about House of Colour as most people do. A friend, who suddenly got that incomprehensible glow-up (at least incomprehensible to an outsider or someone out of the know). She got that kind of glow that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. No procedures, no spray tans. All in all, she was the same, but different. I had known her for years but seeing her so differently didn't make sense. Finally, I discovered it was due to House of Color's services. Immediately, I turned to the internet to seek out my own transformation, but to my dismay, no one was doing it in Idaho at the time.
When did you know you wanted to purchase the franchise?
How soon does a butterfly want to take flight? With each flick of the drapes … magic. I began to see myself more clearly and immediately wanted everyone to have the same experience, because I wanted everyone to feel the same sense of knowing.
What has surprised you about franchise ownership at House of Colour?
Sisterhood and camaraderie are what have surprised me about franchise ownership at House of Colour. Other owners I followed on social media were so encouraging when I shared that I was joining the team. Both my Colour and Style classes have remained anchors while we have grown our separate businesses as satellites. Even when you walk into the best-dressed room in the nation (House of Colour Conference!), EVERY SINGLE PERSON is admiring and cheering on each other.
Name one thing you did that contributed to your success when you first launched your House of Colour business?
One thing that contributed to my success when I first launched my House of Colour business was sharing my excitement about House of Colour with everyone, and my intention to open one. Before I even opened my doors, I had believers who wanted to see the results for themselves. It’s that authenticity and passion that fuel every conversation I have in my community. Curiosity is undeniable if people can see your passion.
How has working with clients been meaningful to you?
In some ways, the significance of working with clients is immeasurable. Do I get to open their eyes to a whole new world of color? Do I get to help them gain a clearer understanding of themselves? Yes! But when a client tells me that no one has ever complimented their eyes before, or when a mom tells me she finally feels at home in her own body, or when a woman tells me that their experience in my studio broke generational self-loathing... there's no way to measure those moments other than by the heart. There's no quantity to count, but it's the smiles, the tears, the breakthroughs that are most meaningful to me.
What are your future goals with House of Colour?
My future goals with House of Colour are to expand reach as far as God will carry me. If I'm able, I'd love to continue this work for the rest of my life, and it seems my daughters might want me to pass the torch.
