Meet Liz Silverthorne

Tell us about yourself! Where do you live, who are your people, and what was a career you had before House of Colour?

Hello! My name is Liz Silverthorne, and I own House of Colour Ladera Ranch. I live in Southern California with my family - my husband and four kids, two girls and two boys. Before House of Colour, I was a high school and middle school history teacher.

How did you first hear about House of Colour?

I first heard about House of Colour like so many of my clients do - on social media!

When did you know you wanted to purchase the franchise?

I knew before I even had my own Color Analysis that I wanted to purchase a franchise! I could immediately see the impact that knowing your best colors could have on everyone’s life. Not only did I want to learn about my own best colors, but I also wanted to teach everyone about their own best colors.

Once I had my Style Analysis, I realized how truly life-changing House of Colour services are. I finally had concrete tools to help me show up authentically and with greater confidence, and I loved that House of Colour offered a blueprint for everyone to feel that same level of confidence.

What has surprised you about franchise ownership at House of Colour?

It has surprised me how much I have enjoyed connecting with each and every client. I have met people of all ages and walks of life in my studio, and it brings me so much joy to show them how to honor who they were made to be. The connections with my fellow stylists have also brought so much joy into my life!

Name one thing you did that contributed to your success when you first launched your House of Colour business?

I knew that what I had to offer as a House of Colour stylist was a luxury service; I never discounted my service or apologized for the price. I believed in the value of what I had to offer and delivered a truly luxurious experience to each and every client. That has helped me to create an incredibly strong referral base from former clients. I also leaned into what I enjoyed in marketing and didn’t worry too much about what I didn’t. For example, networking events felt a little overwhelming to me as an introvert, but I actually love public speaking. I participated in many speaking engagements for moms’ groups, service organizations, and businesses. That really helped spread the word about my business in my community.

How has working with clients been meaningful to you?

House of Colour services are deeply personal. It feels like such a special kind of trust for clients to share their vulnerabilities and struggles with their look. It has been very impactful for me to meet clients where they are, often in moments of growth or life transition, and help them see themselves with fresh eyes.

What are your future goals with House of Colour?

There is so much growth potential in my area. I want to continue marketing in my community and tap into the growth potential around me. I also want to refine my systems and continue streamlining procedures to make my time more efficient.

Anything else you want to add?

As a business owner, I have had to learn a lot about marketing. Social media and community marketing were new skills for me, but I have found that the more time I have spent in those areas, the more I have seen a direct return in the growth of my business. It would be a mistake to think, “if you build it, they will come.” Business ownership has offered me a wonderful opportunity for personal growth, and although that growth isn’t always easy, I have enjoyed learning new skills.
