Meet Shani Smith
Tell us about yourself! Where do you live, who are your people, and what was a career you had before House of Colour?
Hello my name is Shani Smith and I own House of Colour Highland. I just recently celebrated my birthday and turned 57 years young! I live in Highland, UT and spend a lot of time on the East Coast as well.
I have been married for 38 years and raised four beautiful, smart, and capable children. I am also a grandma of six. My grandbabies are the best part of my life (sorry, House of Colour). I was a stay-at-home mom for nearly 30 years and do not regret the time I spent nurturing my children. I love to travel and (fun fact) used to run a travel blog with my two daughters. I have traveled to 60 countries and love art as well. I am also involved in two other franchises, and before House of Colour, I was helping with those part-time.
How did you first hear about House of Colour?
My daughter, Savannah, after having her second child, was feeling stuck in the postpartum phase and invited me to a double color appointment. trenches, and she invited me to go with her to a double color appointment. Her hope was that Color Analysis would help her feel better about her changing body and life in general. So I went, and it was so much fun! I loved it!
I saw right away that Savannah was warm and hoped I would be, too. We are both Autumns, and I love my color palette. My daughter, Savannah Hegerhorst, is also a House of Colour stylist, and we have a lot of fun bouncing ideas off each other, sharing successes and failures, and supporting each other.
When did you know you wanted to purchase the franchise?
Once again, Savannah played a big role in my decision. It just flowed naturally and made sense with my lifestyle and goals. sense with my lifestyle and my life goals.
Name one thing you did that contributed to your success when you first launched your House of Colour business?
This is the one thing that I did then, and I still do. My mantra is “Keep it small, keep it simple, give it time.”
That helps me really do what I can, not get overwhelmed by it all, focus on my own success rather than what others may or may not be doing, and take it. It frees me from comparison and urgency. I know I can figure things out as I go.
How has working with clients been meaningful to you?
One of the main things I love about this job is that I can really see the beauty in each person. Maybe even people I wouldn't normally stop to notice in everyday life. I think that is powerful. I work with people of all ages and from all socioeconomic classes, races, genders, etc. I have been told that what I do is vain … I know better. I see it every day, in real time. It can be hugely impactful and influential in helping others to see themselves in a new light.
What are your future goals with House of Colour?
I have no idea … today is today. I’m doing my best today. Again, my mantra comes into play. If the time comes and I feel like I want to scale, then I will. My goal is simply to do my best every day and see where that leads. every single day and see where that leads me.
